National Stary Theatre

The Helena Modrzejewska National Stary (Old) Theatre in Kraków is one of the three Polish national drama theatres. It operates independently scene since 1954 and since 1956 under its current name. Its origins though, just like the origins of the Juliusz Słowacki Theatre, date back to the late eighteenth century.

Initially artistic performances in Kraków took place in the Spiski Palace at the Main Market Square (at number 34, now the building houses the popular ”Hawełka” restaurant). In 1799 the theatre moved to its present building at the corner of Jagiellońska and Szczepańska streets. It is worth remembering  the date 1865 as the year when Helena Modrzejewska appeared on the Kraków stage – now the Stary Theatre is named after the once famous actress. In the late nineteenth and early twentieth century plays were staged at  Plac Św. Ducha, where the theatre began to function as athe Juliusz Słowacki Theatre, while at Plac Szczepański only occasional performances were showed.

The building of the theatre was reconstructed in the Art Nouveau style between 1903-1906. In the interwar period the Municipal School of Drama was situated in the building. The Stary Theatre has functioned independently since 1954, two years later, it adopted its current name.

It is difficult to list all major artists who stood on the boards of the Stary Theatre. Among the most important are surely: Zygmunt Hübner, Andrzej Wajda, Konrad Swinarski, Jerzy Jarocki, Jerzy Grzegorzewski, Krzysztof Kieślowski, Kazimierz Kutz, Józef Szajna, Agnieszka Holland, Mikołaj Grabowski, and among the actors: Jerzy Bińczycki, Teresa Budzisz-Krzyżanowska, Mieczysława Ćwiklińska, Anna Dymna, Jan Frycz, Krzysztof Globisz, Leszek Herdegen, Gustaw Holoubek, Kazimierz Kaczor, Edward Linde-Lubaszenko, Jerzy Nowak, Jan Nowicki, Jan Peszek, Franciszek Pieczka, Anna Polony, Wojciech Pszoniak, Jerzy Radziwiłowicz, Wiktor Sadecki, Dorota Segda, Anna Seniuk, Jerzy Stuhr, Jerzy Trela, Marek Walczewski.
